Hugh Webb

March 3, 1943 — May 30, 2021

Navarre, Florida

Hugh Webb lived on Soundshore Dr. in Navarre, Florida, for the last 17 years, but it tells not how he lived, for he was his father's pride and joy.  A life well-lived begins in the foundations of one's youth.  Such was the case for Hugh, growing up in the countryside of Northeast Ohio with its orchards, fields, oak forests, and rambling horse trails.  He would ride the trails in the discovery of freedom.  From that, he gleaned his lust for life.  This served as the groundwork of Hugh's ability to harness his strength and massive desire to serve.  And serve he did, entering the Navy in 1964 after finishing with a degree in history and journalism from Youngstown State University in under three years.  This momentum directed him to two terms as a decorated Vietnam veteran, who, after being seriously wounded, opted to continue his Navy career of 26 yrs. Guarding the world's seas.  The highlight of his career was as the Commanding Officer of the USS Roark.  Turning what was once the least reputable ship into the most reputable.  While he commanded the seas abroad, his wife of 50 years, Vibeke, commanded the home front while also serving as a nurse.  Amidst serving his country, they raised two children Christina and Hugh Erik, in El Cajon, California.  After retiring from his illustrious Navy career, he went to work for ITT Gilfillan Corp., selling billions in radar and satellite systems around the world.  His success did not go unnoticed as he was promoted to Vice President.  After ten years with ITT, he decided to retire completely.  He and Vibeke moved to Navarre, Florida, shortly thereafter enjoying the fruits of all their labors in a home overlooking the intercoastal waterway off the Gulf of Mexico and the soundtrack of his musical memories to reflect on.  Vibeke, beloved wife, and mother passed away in 2014. Hugh never faltered in appreciating the blessings offered in life and married Merete Wilcox two years later, who stood by his side in sickness and health to the very last hours of his life on May 30th, 2021.  It is strangely apropos that Memorial Day was only minutes away at his passing, given that his entire life was dedicated to his American brothers and sisters, who were lost but not forgotten.  And so too, we remember  Hugh, a.k.a “the Duke,” as that rare red-blooded American patriot who brought to bear his lust for life for his country and his family.  We love you, and we salute you. Rest in Peace…
