Peggy Wheeler

June 22, 1928 — October 5, 2021

Gulf Breeze

Peggy Ann Henderson Wheeler, 93, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, passed away peacefully at Gulf Breeze Hospital, on October 5, 2021. Peggy was the sweetest, kindest, most nonjudgemental person in our world!

Born on June 22, 1928, in Moultrie, Georgia, Peggy was the daughter of the late Leonard William and Ruby Rebecca Henderson.

Preceding her in death on July 11th, 1992, was her husband of over 45 years, Russell Kenneth Wheeler, whom she married on June 6, 1947, after he served in the United States Navy during World War II. Also preceding her in death was her beloved daughter Cheryl Marie Wheeler, 59, who passed February 12th, 2020.

Peggy’s faith played a very important role in her life. She was a devoted Catholic and had attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pensacola, as well as St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

In earlier years, Peggy and Russell enjoyed playing tennis and golf and living on the water in Santa Rosa Shores in Gulf Breeze. Russell was an avid fisherman, and they both enjoyed fresh seafood he would catch from their pier. It was not uncommon for Peggy and Russell to invite neighbors over for a fish fry with mullet and crabs caught from the waters behind their Santa Rosa Shores home.

After Russell’s passing Peggy remained in Santa Rosa shores, enjoying living on the Pensacola sound, and playing golf with friends. She also took time to travel the world. But she really enjoyed having their home on the water be a familiar and enjoyable meeting place for their children and grandchildren over the years.

She is survived by her five children, Michael Wheeler and her daughter-in-law, Carol, of Gulf Breeze, Florida; Patrick Wheeler and her daughter-in-law, Andrea of Freeport, Florida; Terry Wheeler, and her daughter-in-law, Patti of Pensacola, Florida; David Wheeler and her daughter-in-law, Diana of Pensacola Beach, Florida, and her son, Richard Wheeler, of Los Angeles, California; her sister Joy Brown and her husband Bill of Boiling Springs, South Carolina; her brother Dan Henderson and his wife Merrie, of Perdido Key, Florida; her six grandchildren, Christopher Wheeler, Jesse Wheeler, Tanner Wheeler, Matt Wheeler, Sam Wheeler, Ciara Wheeler, McKenna Duncan and Brianna Duncan; her great grandchildren; Hazel Wheeler, Russell Wheeler, Keeli Wheeler, and Faye Wheeler, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, husband, and daughter, Peggy was preceded in death by her brother Wayne Henderson of Monroeville, Alabama.

Visitation will be from 10:00 until mass begins at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 19, at St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church, 6464 Gulf Breeze Pkwy, Gulf Breeze, FL  32563.  Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Gulf Breeze.
