Dennis "Mike" Farrens

June 7, 1948 — February 8, 2020

Gulf Breeze

Dennis Michael (Mike) Farrens died peacefully in his home on February 8, 2020 at the
age of 71. His long battle with Parkinson’s Disease is over. Mike was the most beloved
of the Farrens family. He was known for his gentle presence and subtle sense of humor.
Mike was born in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey on June 7, 1948 to Major Beverly (Ben)
Farrens and Juanita Guzman Farrens. He was the fourth of eight children: Rebecca Ann,
Donna Marie, Linda Sue, Perry Hamilton (Tommy), James Steven, Debra Louise and
David Scott. The family moved to New Orleans in 1955 where they remained until the
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Then Gulf Breeze, Florida became Mike’s new
home where he lived for the past 15 years.
Mike attended St. Dominic’s elementary school and St. Aloysius high school in New
Orleans. He then attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. After college, he
got a job with Edison Bros. and became a cornerstone at Baker’s Shoe Store in Clearview
Mall. Mike had a talent for telling jokes. His reputation grew quickly and soon
“Everybody loves Mike” became a common phrase at the center. Whether a CEO, a
manager or a janitor, Mike treated everyone with respect. He genuinely listened when
engaged in conversation and never failed to close with a one liner for a laugh.
Mike loved to debate no matter the topic. With an expansive knowledge in a wide range
of subjects, he always argued for the underdog. He rationalized and delivered his
points with conviction and empathy. Before Parkinson’s affected his mobility, Mike’s
favorite past time was golf. If he wasn’t on the course, he was at the driving range or
chipping balls in the yard. He loved to spend time with the family - telling stories,
playing games and watching football on TV.
Towards the end, it was evident that the pain Mike suffered was excruciating. His body
became distorted; his breath, suppressed. Yet he never complained. Even in his final
hours, Mike kept his sense of humor, his positive manner and hope for life ahead.
Mike will be forever missed by his family and friends.
