Robert David Spaeth was born July 27, 1952, in Batavia, New York. He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Arlene Spaeth in Montgomery, AL, and his brother Dennis Spaeth. He is survived by his wife, Vera Spaeth, sister Karen Spaeth son Robby Spaeth (Mary Frances), daughters Jennifer Spaeth Nix (Brian), Christy Smith (Kyle) and Tara Mikels and grandchildren Carson Stone, Carlee Holliday, Barrett Spaeth, Amelia Nix, Gavriel Nix and Kylee Smith and niece Stephanie Daniels. And his numerous friends that he loved like family.
Some of us called him Dad, Poppy, Big Hearted Bob, but mostly the family heard Coach over all these years. If you knew Robert David Spaeth you were a better person because of it. So many generations were touched by his heart, inspiration, and love of coaching. He started his career at the YMCA before moving to Goodwin Junior High in 1972 as a teacher and coach. His coaching prowess was immediately felt as he led the football team for 8 seasons with a perfect 64-0 record. Bobby moved on to Brewbaker Junior High where he launched the athletic program and served as coach and then Athletic Director over the next 19 years. He retired after 27 years with the Montgomery Public School System and continued as a successful businessman with multiple ventures in play. You could find him wheeling and dealing used cars and selling tires and maybe even frying turkeys on the lot. Every New Years and 4th of July you could find him and many friends and family working at the local fireworks stands bringing joy to the surrounding areas as we all laughed as his descriptions of each item he sold.
He was the life of the party and always had a smile on his face. When he wasn’t coaching or selling you could find him watching pretty much any sport. His love of fishing led him to spend many hours on the lake, river, and the Gulf. Bobby had a lifelong dream of retiring somewhere on the beach and finally realized that dream in 2019. He spent the last 5 years in Gulf Breeze, Florida meeting a host of new friends and making so many memories. Those that knew Bobby knew that he was living his dream and could usually find him at one of his favorite spots of Paradise Bar and Grill and The Break.
Bobby was an incredible human that loved with his whole heart. He touched many lives throughout his career, business, and personal life and will be truly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Bobby’s honor to Dream Court Montgomery at dreamcourt.org, or The Miracle League of Montgomery montgomerymiracleleague.com.Saturday, April 13, 2024
