Richard Sellers, a beloved husband, father, and esteemed orthopaedic surgeon, passed away peacefully in Pensacola, Florida, on October 30th, 2024, at the age of 68. Born on October 2nd, 1956, in Birmingham, Alabama, Richard's life journey began when his father started a new job in Pensacola while his mother stayed in Birmingham until his birth. Richard's early years were spent in Pensacola and Auburn, Alabama, before returning to Pensacola from 1959 to 1967. The family later settled in Gulf Breeze from 1967 to 1974, where Richard was part of the inaugural class at Gulf Breeze High School, graduating in 1974. His academic journey took him to Tulane University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, graduating magna cum laude with honors. Richard continued at Tulane University School of Medicine, completing his medical education and residency in orthopaedics at the University of Southern California. He further honed his expertise with a fellowship in sports medicine at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedics, where he provided medical coverage for renowned teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Tampa Bay Lazers.
In 1988, Richard met and married his wife, Elizabeth “Beth” Sellers, whom he adored and shared a deep and abiding love. Early in his career, Richard and Beth settled in Tampa, where they welcomed their first child, Ben. While in Tampa, Richard had the privilege of covering the University of Tampa and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Eventually, the Sellers returned to Pensacola to raise their expanding family and welcomed their son, Preston, and daughter, Madeline shortly after.
In addition to being a successful orthopaedic surgeon with a thriving private practice, Richard was also a pillar of the Pensacola community. His approach to patient care was best exemplified by his compassionate motto, “We will treat you like a member of the family…that we like!” Richard’s dedication to healing thousands with his tremendous skill and unfettered kindness remained steadfast for nearly 30 years. During that time, he provided medical coverage for Pensacola High School, dedicating his time and expertise to supporting student-athletes, particularly those with limited resources.
A natural teacher, Richard shared his faith by leading Sunday School classes for 11th-grade boys at Hillcrest Baptist Church. His commitment to nurturing the hearts and minds of his students reflected his desire to inspire curiosity and growth in everyone he encountered. Richard's larger-than-life presence was marked by a booming yet calm voice, offering comfort and guidance to all in need. He was a rock and a lighthouse, a brilliant mind who pioneered advances in medical care and touched the lives of many. Above all, he prioritized his faith, family, and friends, always ready to lend a helping hand in times of need. Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Beth; his three children, Ben, Preston, and Madeline; and countless friends and community members whose lives he transformed through his unwavering support and love. His legacy of compassion, service, and faith will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Richard Sellers will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his remarkable impact on his family and community.
