Hazel Whitmer

July 1, 1937 — March 16, 2016

Hazel Whitmer, 78, a Pensacola resident since 1964, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016. She was born in Arkansas on 7/1/1937, the daughter of Beatrice Flaherty Simmons and “Eddie” Simmons. She married Glen M. Whitmer in 1953 and began life as the wife of a US Marine Corps aviator. She was a member of the Marine Corps Officers Wives league and a frequent contributor to the organizations written publications. After her husband Captain Whitmer’s untimely death in a flight training accident in 1965, she raised 4 children on her own and enjoyed teaching Sunday school and serving as a Girl Scout leader. She worked for many years as a civil service employee at Pensacola Naval Air Station and particularly enjoyed her work with the Blue Angels. Following her retirement, she spent time reading, crocheting and traveling to visit her children. Hazel Whitmer is survived by her 4 children, Debra, Donna, David and Doris (Casey), 9 grandchildren and many great grandchildren who miss her. A time of visitation will be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home on Thursday, March 17, 2016 from 6 - 7:00 PM with a Funeral Service following at 7:00 PM. Burial will be in Barrancas National Cemetery on Friday, March 18, 2016 at 9:30 AM.
