Donald James Stephens, 77, of Gulf Breeze, FL, died on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. He was born on Friday, February 4, 1949, in New York City, NY.

Donald graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and attended Bronx Community College. He enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and served in the 1st Calvary, and was awarded the Bronze Star. Donald was married in 1974 to Gail Coughlin. Together they raised their family in Lake Peekskill, NY. During his working career, Donald was a 3rd railman for Metro-North Railroad, phone company, and also the State of FL, before his retirement.

Enjoyed working with his hands and staying active. He was athletically gifted, excelling at basketball, running, as well as pool. He was a member of a pool league that competed in the world championships in Las Vegas. Known for his dry, self-deprecating wit, he always kept his family and friends entertained. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who always spent time nurturing his relationships with his children and grandchildren. He had a love for B horror movies; the cheesier the better. Affectionately known as "The Dog Whisperer," he loved watching and spending time with all the family dogs.

In addition to his athletic talent, he also excelled at the arts. He became a talented Irish dancer, winning many awards. He was artistically gifted, working in various mediums including paint and woodwork. He published a novel titled No Wedding Pictures.

Donald is preceded in death by his wife- Gail Stephens, his son- Matthew Stephens, his brothers-Raymond and Thomas Stephens, his sister- Gail McGarry, and his parents- Thomas and Cecelia Stephens. He is survived by daughters Angela Stephens (Dawn) of Gulf Breeze and Elizabeth Willis (David) of Milton, sons Edward Gura (Anne) of Pensacola and John Gura (Rhonda) of Rainbow City, AL, sister June Stephens of Pennsylvania, and eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services to be held at Rose Lawn Funeral Home in Gulf Breeze on Thursday August 20th, 2026 at 1:OOPM. Doors open for visitation with family and friends at 12:00PM. Luncheon to follow at Aloha Grill in Gulf Breeze.
