Debra Kay Brown

March 1, 1952 — February 27, 2026

Debra Kay Brown was born on March 1, 1952, in Pawpaw, Kentucky, in the hills of Pike County. Raised in a small holler, she grew up grounded in family, resilience, and pride. Kentucky remained central to her identity throughout her life, shaping her determination and deep sense of loyalty.

As a young woman, Debra moved to Michigan, where she became a mother to her son, Jason. Later, she relocated to Alabama to pursue nursing, a decision that would define the next chapter of her life.

She began her career as a registered nurse in Birmingham, first serving in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Caring for premature and medically fragile infants required precision, calm, and unwavering focus, qualities that defined her both professionally and personally. Nursing was never simply employment for her. It was a responsibility she embraced fully.

While working in Birmingham, she met Tom Brown. They were both in their mid-twenties when they met, and from that point forward they built a life together defined by shared purpose and loyalty. After their marriage, Debra welcomed Tom’s sons, Joe, Ben, and Eric, into her family and raised them with steady devotion.

Debra continued advancing professionally, earning her Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, graduating at the top of her class. She later served as an administrator for the St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing. Teaching mattered deeply to her. She believed in preparation, high standards, and guiding others toward excellence.

In time, Debra shifted her energy toward helping build the law practice that would become the foundation of her family’s future. As the firm’s Chief Administrator and Legal Assistant, she was instrumental in its growth. She brought discipline, organization, and steady support to Tom’s and her firm. Together, they built their life intentionally, working as true partners in every sense.

Travel became one of her greatest joys. Debra and Tom explored widely, both across the United States and internationally. A particularly meaningful journey took them through France. Before the trip, Debra took French language classes so she could better understand and appreciate the culture. She later turned her photographs and experiences into carefully assembled books, proud to share what she had seen and learned with friends and family.

The Gulf Coast held a special place in her heart. Pensacola had long been part of her life, and sunsets over the water brought her visible joy. In her final year, she was known for sending photographs of the evening sky to family and friends, a quiet ritual of sharing beauty even during difficult days.

When diagnosed with ALS, Debra met the illness with determination and resolve. Even as her physical strength declined, her instinct to care for others remained unchanged. She continued to check in, offer guidance, and make sure everyone around her was looked after. Her strength was steady and practical, expressed through persistence rather than complaint.

Debra’s life was marked by pride in her Kentucky roots, devotion to her profession, loyalty to her husband and family, and a belief in preparation, education, and shared effort. She built carefully, supported faithfully, and loved deeply.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Tom Brown; her sons, Jason, Ben, and Eric; her brothers James and Donald; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and many friends whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her parents James Edgker Ramey and Kathleen Scarberry, and her son, Joe.

Debra will be laid to rest at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Gulf Breeze, FL.
